Frequently, excessive sleepiness is the reason that patients present for an evaluation of possible sleep apnea. Sleep apnea is only one cause for sleepiness. Others include insufficient sleep, insomnia, circadian rhythm disorders, medication side effect, mood disorders (usually depression), Periodic Limb Movements of Sleep, Restless Leg Syndrome, metabolic abnormalities (such as an underactive thyroid gland), narcolepsy and idiopathic hypersomnia. A comprehensive sleep evaluation will usually help to identify the etiology and allow for individualized treatment.
