Are you tired of feeling self-conscious about your ears standing out too far from your head? Otoplasty, also known as ear surgery, may be the solution you’ve been looking for. This transformative cosmetic procedure can reshape and reposition the ears to create a more proportionate and symmetrical appearance, ultimately boosting your self-esteem and confidence.
But otoplasty isn’t just about aesthetics—it can also improve functionality by correcting structural abnormalities that cause discomfort or hinder hearing. With the skills and expertise of a qualified plastic surgeon, otoplasty offers both physical and emotional benefits that can positively impact your life.
What to Expect
The procedure is done under either local or twilight anesthesia through an incision placed behind the ear. It is through this incision that the cartilage is either trimmed to allow it to set back or weakened to allow it to fold in a closer or more compacted position relative to the head. The sutures used in this procedure are mostly absorbable and do not require removal. The level of discomfort is controlled with simple Tylenol and a mild pain pill at most. Some doctors will suggest a 7-day course of an antibiotic as well, given the required manipulation of cartilage with sutures.
The earliest age for repair is usually dictated by the maturity level of the patient with the general suggestion being at 5-6 years of age. While insurance does not usually cover the procedure, the cost is very manageable. In the final analysis, the boost to self-esteem in our young patients, when the ear prominence is decreased to an inconspicuous degree, is palpable.
