It can be scary and overwhelming to receive a diagnosis that requires you to use medical equipment like a CPAP/BiPAP machine for treatment. But, don't worry! It's more common than you may think, and there are solutions available that enable many people with a wide variety of conditions to get the help they need. Titration studies begin and end at the same times as standard sleep studies. Throughout the night, a respiratory therapist slowly adjusts the therapy device until the patient's respiratory problems cease.
CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) is a durable medical device that provides a constant flow of air into the patient's airway. The constant airflow acts as a pneumatic splint to keep the airway open and prevents the airway from collapsing (apnea). CPAP also eliminates hypopnea, which is when the patient's airflow decreases by 30% and causes oxygen desaturation.
BiPAP (Bilevel Positive Airway Pressure) is like CPAP but provides different pressures for inspiration and expiration. The device cycles between the two pressures as the patient breathes.
