With the Holidays upon us, we're all looking forward to laughter and relaxation with our loved ones around a table filled with delicious food. And when the feasting is over, we may easily dismiss any heartburn and acid reflux we experience as an unfortunate side effect of holiday eating. But sometimes, heartburn and reflux can be a sign of something much more serious. Something called GERD (Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease).
November 20-26, 2022 is GERD Awareness Week, and ENTA is using the occasion to alert everyone to its dangers.
GERD is a primary risk factor for esophageal cancer, the fastest growing cancer in the United States.
Symptoms of GERD
The most common symptom of GERD is heartburn.
Other symptoms include:
- Reflux of fluid into the mouth.
- Difficulty or pain when swallowing.
- The sensation of food being 'stuck' in the throat.
- Hoarseness.
- Throat-clearing.
- Chronic sore throat/cough and wheezing.
If you are experiencing heartburn two or more times a week, or you're having trouble or pain when swallowing, it may be time to see one of the Voice and Swallowing (V&S) specialists at ENT and Allergy Associates (ENTA). ENTA’s Voice and Swallowing specialists are devoted to the treatment of heartburn, acid reflux, and voice and swallowing problems.
